Burial Guidelines
As a conservation cemetery, care will be taken to protect the natural environment. We will work together to keep the land in its natural state, serving as a refuge for wildlife and native plants.
Planning
Burials will involve natural, non-toxic, biodegradable burial containers only such as untreated wood, woven wicker, bamboo, or uncoated cardboard, or a shroud made of natural fabrics such as cotton, linen, or flax. Vaults are not permitted.
No burials are permitted with use of chemical preservatives or embalming fluids.
Natural materials may be buried with the deceased (fabrics, mementos, letters, etc.).
All burials shall be at least two feet in depth to the top of the burial container.
No headstones or monument grave markers may be used. The GPS location of the site will be provided, and the precise geo-location of the grave will be marked with an in- ground metal disk.
day of burial
Outdoor and weather-appropriate attire is encouraged, including closed-toe shoes.
Families may assist in the burial process – shovels will be available.
Cut flowers may be placed on graves, and native plants, prairie hay, and seed may be planted in keeping with the restoration plans. No other items are permitted.
Ceremonies may take place in the area designated in advance, and we will work together to minimize the impact to the natural environment.
Contact us for recommendations on local celebrants, ministers, musicians, etc.
Blazing Star Prairie Management
The Blazing Star Sanctuary shall be managed using practices appropriate to maintain Blazing Star Prairie as a coastal prairie. These practices may include prescribed burns, shredding, invasive species removals, and intermittent cattle grazing, which are beneficial to the maintenance of the native grassland ecosystem.
Access to the Sanctuary may be impacted by planned management practices, and we will communicate any temporary closings or impacts to visitors on the website.
Friends, family, and the public may participate in organized volunteer events to increase biodiversity on the Blazing Star Prairie.
